It's the first time Havaianas commissioned a Filipino to design a sole for their flip-flops. I called the illustration "Starwriters", the idea was about space exploration and spacemen who loved tracing & doodling constellations in space. 1 -9 Photos of the actual pair. 10. I was pretty excited to try something new with regards to production for the exhibit. 1-3 Telos Face-off Silkscreen (Edition of 10) A Sith and Jedi face-off at the snowy landscape of Telos. I wanted to differentiate the Jedi and the Sith in terms of character design. The Jedi is made up mostly of quadrilaterals (squares & rectangles) while the Sith lord is composed mostly of triangles to show aggression. Even their lightsabers also reflect this design decision. 4-9 Vader Statuette made of Sintra Board & Wood This is my own take of Darth Vader. I wanted him to look geometric and badass. 10 Geometric Lightsabers Airbrush The idea for this one is similar to the Telos Face-Off and Vader. I wanted to show the lightsabers of the Jedi and Sith in an iconic way. Keir Novesky, the art director of ESPN wanted me to incorporate elements from photographic tools (both old and new). My solution was to combine sports and photography in a witty & quirky manner: 1. American Football. The QB throws an "eye ball" 2. Swimming. Film strip that's a pool. 3. Baseball. A shutter homerun. 4. Soccer. A goal towards a polaroid. 5. X-games. Grinding over a lens. 6. Basketball. He dunks on a goal post out of a camera tripod. 7. Various sports. I wanted everyone to be in close proximity to one another - with houses, buildings and different places of work as points of interests. The layout was revised to make it fit the different screen sizes of the iOS app. I worked with Chris Sybico, designer of Paypal on this project. 1. The brief was to create a How-to illo for creating your own Hologram. It was fun working on this especially since Ben Fraser, the art director of WIRED was very much game on my proposal to introduce a Mecha & a Monster on the diagram. A space pilot sees a monster coming out of the sea (for some reason most monsters do come out of the sea, just look at Godzilla). The guy doesn't have any weapon to defeat the monster so he creates a hologram of his Mecha action figure. After seeing the mecha the monster cries and goes home. Buenos Aires commissioned by Jamie Oliver Magazine. The idea was to fit the different places of interest in Buenos Aires (provided by the art director) in its own silhouette/outline. 2. Adobo magazine asked me to design and illustrate the map of The Collective-- a quirky group of shops in Malugay St., Makati. 3. A Philippine map I made last January for Sea Expo's magazine - Navigator. I stylized the map with geometric waves, a bit of how Manansala would treat his surfaces & backgrounds. The series was never used, so I made them into prints for the Bloom Festival instead. I've always loved looking at places and cities while on a car, bus or train.
